Field Hockey Blanks Yale, 5-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Yale, 5-0, in non-conference play on Sunday, September 7 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Providence improves to 3-1 on the season, while Yale drops to 0-1.

Junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) got the Friars on the board with an unassisted tally just 1:06 into the game for a 1-0 lead. She followed with her second goal of the game at the 9:01 mark off a feed from sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.). Sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) gave the Friars a 3-0 lead at the 24:46 mark as she connected on her second goal of the season during a corner. Ruggieri's goal was assisted by junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.). Providence finished off the first half scoring barrage with a goal from junior Megan Montecalvo (Ipswich, Mass.). Lipski was credited with the assist as she fed Montecalvo a forward pass near the right post.

In the second half, the Friars completed the shutout, while scoring one more goal for the 5-0 victory. Senior Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) recorded the goal off a deflection. Senior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) was credited with the assist on the play.

Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) earned her first shutout of the season and 13th of her career. She finished the game with two saves. Charlotte Goins allowed four goals and made three saves for Yale in the first 35 minutes of action. She was relieved by Katie Bolling at halftime. Bolling allowed one goal and made three saves.

Providence returns to action on Wednesday, September 10 against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
