Providence Tennis Loses Tight Match Against Bryant

The Providence College women's tennis team traveled to Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday, September 13 to face intra-state rival Bryant University in the team's first head-to-head matchup of the year. Despite earning three singles victories, the Friars couldn't seal the doubles point and fell, 4-3.
Gaining victories on the singles side were senior Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.), sophomore Liz Gillis (Mattpoisett, Mass.), and junior Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.). Rissolo's win came in the No. 2 position, coming from behind to beat Bryant's Chelsea Downing, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Gillis had a commanding win over Bryant's Amanda Granville, earning the point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, competing in the No. 5 position. Cusack was also strong, defeating Martha Chapman, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot. The Friars only doubles win on the day came when Cusack teamed up senior Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.). The pair took the No. 3 doubles point with an 8-1 victory.
Next up for the Friars is their first home match on Tuesday, September 16. Providence is hosting the University of Hartford on their home courts in Providence, R.I. Matches are set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
