Providence, R.I. -- Led by sophomore Kate DelCiampo's (Wethersfield, Conn.) goal and assist, the Providence College women's soccer team defeated the Bryant Bulldogs 3-1 on Thursday, August 28 at Glay Field. The Friars improve to 1-0 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2.
Junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) started the Friar offensive attack early, with a volley from 10 yards out that was punched over the crossbar by Bryant goalkeeper Katie Mitchell. DelCiampo, who missed last season with an injury, entered the game soon after and was an immediate factor. In the 34th minute, she fed junior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) a pass to the top left corner of the box. Ricciardi put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 Friar lead. Minutes later, DelCiampo stole the ball on an errant pass and scored her first goal as a Friar from six yards to give PC a 2-0 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Bryant's Amy Orzechowski took a shot in the 70th minute off a deflection that sailed pass Providence sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) to cut the PC advantage in half 2-1. Later on, the Friars added insurance as the Bulldogs were charged with an own goal, bringing the score to 3-1.
Schott finished the day with four saves off 10 Bulldog shots. Mitchell stopped four shots off 16 Friar attempts.
PC will next host Stony Brook on Sunday, August 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Glay Field.
