PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - Providence College men's soccer coach Chaka Daley and senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) were selected to participate in the 2009 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine which will be held on January 9-13 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The MLS Player Combine will have 65 seniors from 45 Division I schools. Additionally, coaching and management staffs from all 15 MLS teams will be in attendance to scout the talent prior to the MLS SuperDraft, which will be held on January 15. Daley is one of four coaches chosen to the combine.
Daley recently completed his ninth season at Providence and led his squad to its fourth consecutive winning season, a feat that had not been accomplished since 1970-73. In addition, the Friars made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament (2005, 2006, 2007), a first in the history of the College.
Daley's team began a string a three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2005 as the team posted one of its most impressive seasons in the history of Friar soccer. The Friars registered a 7-4-9 mark and recorded one of the most improved records in NCAA history. The Friars finished 9.5 games better than the 2004 season, which tied the team for the 10th best turnaround in NCAA history. The team started the season with a nine-game unbeaten streak (4-0-5), which was the longest by a PC team since the 1972 team was undefeated through 10 games.
The Friars advanced to the semifinals where they earned a 0-0 tie against 16th-ranked USF, but did not advance to the Finals as they were defeated in the penalty kick shootout, 3-2. Daley continued to lead the Friars to new heights as they earned their first NCAA Tournament win ever when they defeated 13th-ranked Hofstra, 1-0, in overtime in the First Round. In recognition of his strong coaching performance, Daley earned the NSCAA Division I New England Coach of the Year honors and was one of eight finalists for the NSCAA/Adidas National Coach of the Year accolades.
In 2006, Daley led the Friars to another remarkable season. PC posted a 13-7 overall record, including a 7-4 mark in league play. The seven BIG EAST wins set a school record, while the 13 overall victories were one shy of a school mark (14 set in 1984). The Friars, who were ranked in the national polls for six-consecutive weeks, earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament, where they hosted Louisville in the first round. It marked the first time in school history that PC hosted a BIG EAST Tournament match. PC defeated Louisville, 2-0, setting up a quarterfinal match at 15th-ranked Cincinnati. The Friars defeated the Bearcats, 2-0, and advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons.
In 2007, the Friars finished with a 9-8-2 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in school history. Providence earned its third-consecutive winning campaign, a feat that had not been accomplished since 1985-87. In addition, the Friars finished with a 5-4-2 record in the BIG EAST. It marked the first time ever that the Friars enjoyed back-to-back winning seasons in the league. Among the big wins last season, was a 1-0 result at Boston College, which was the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Maduro, who became the first Friar ever to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors twice (2006, 2007), was named to an All-BIG EAST Team for four consecutive seasons. He is the only Friar to earn such distinction. In addition to his first team accolades in 2006 and 2007, Maduro, who was named a 2006 NSCAA All-America First Team, garnered All- BIG EAST Third Team honors in 2005 in his first full season at Providence. Maduro became only the second Friar to be named to the All-America First Team in the 41-year history of the program. In 2008, Maduro played in all 19 matches and was third on the team in scoring with two goals and six assists, including one goal and four assists in BIG EAST Conference matches. His six assists was the highest total on the team and matched a career high. In addition, he finished with 50 career points (14 goals, 22 assists), which ranks eighth all-time in the Providence career scoring list.
