NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Southeast Missouri State, 67-59, in the first round of the Tulane DoubleTree Classic in New Orleans, La. on December 20. Junior Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) netted 16 points - all in the second half - to help the Friars pull away late. Senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) chipped in 14 points.

Despite going without a field goal for the last 8:14 of the first half, the Friars went into the locker room at halftime with a 24-23 advantage. Providence led by 10 (22-12) with 8:14 on the clock and managed just two free throws by Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) at the 1:47 mark, while Southeast Missouri State scored 11 points in the stretch. The Friars first half effort was marred by fouls and turnovers. Eleven of SEMO's 23 points in the opening 20 minutes came off of 14 Providence turnovers.

In the second half, the Redhawks mounted an eight point lead (34-26) with 16:22 remaining on the clock. It marked SEMO's largest lead of the game. The Friars battled back to tie the game, 34-34, on an 8-0 run at the 14:19 mark. Southeast Missouri State regained a four-point lead (38-34) with 13:07 on the clock, but the Friars would fight back to take the lead for good with 11:22 remaining (40-38). Providence closed out the rest of the game with a 27-21 scoring advantage to take the win.

Darrian joined Marandola and Cournoyer in double figures for Providence with 11 points and narrowly missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.

Sonya Daugherty led Southeast Missouri State with a game-high 19 points. Lesley Adams hauled in nine boards.

Providence (6-4) will return to action on Sunday, December 21 when it faces Tulane University in the championship game of the Tulane DoubleTree Classic in New Orleans, La. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. (CT)/4:00 p.m. (ET).
