PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) scoring her fourth goal of the season, the Providence College women's soccer team fell to the St. John's Red Storm, 2-1 on Friday, October 24 at Glay Field in Providence. With the loss, the Friars fall to 5-8-3 (0-7-3 BIG EAST) while St. John's improves to 8-5-4 (4-4-2).
Camburn's goal came early in the first half. After the ball deflected off a St. John's back, Camburn gained possession in the attacking third. From there, she drove into the box and took a shot from 10 yards out that sailed past Red Storm goalkeeper Kristin Russell to give the Friars the early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. The Red Storm would answer in the 21st minute as Sarah McGrath touched the ball to teammate C.J. Ludemann, who took a shot from 15 yards out that eluded Friar sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Red Storm would take the lead for good in the second half. Off a corner kick from Ludemann in the 55th minute, the ball was headed around inside the box before Tara Mendoza put her own header in the back of the net to give St. John's the 2-1 advantage. The Friars' best chance for the equalizer came in the 68th minute as an offside call denied a goal from junior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.)
Schott finished the game with two saves off six Red Storm shots. Russell also had two saves off 11 Friar attempts. The Friars also had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4.
Providence will conclude their season with senior day festivities on Sunday, October 26 as they take on the Syracuse Orange at Glay Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
