The Providence College swimming and diving squads battled the University of Maine on Saturday, January 19, at home in Providence, R.I. The Friars were fresh off their 10-day winter training trip to St. Thomas, USVI. The trip proved to be beneficial for the Friar men as they captured their first win of the season, defeating the Black Bears, 154-140. The PC women fell, 213-82.
Leading the way on the men's side was junior Chris Ray (Basking Ridge, N.J.). Ray took first place in both the 100-meter breaststroke (1:13.86) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:40.45), and was a member of the first-place 200-meter medley relay team who finished with a time of 1:55.99.
On the women's side, junior Blair Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) and senior Kellie Ryan (Dracut, Mass.) each took one event on the day. Flynn's first place finish came in the 50-meter freestyle (28.70), while Ryan earned first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 199.03.
The Friar swimming & diving teams return to action on Saturday, January 26 when they take on the University of Vermont. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at home in Providence, R.I.
