Providence, R.I. - Under the leadership of Head Coach Jim McGirr, the Providence College women's soccer team returns to action in 2007 with an experienced and talented squad. With six seniors leading the team, the Friars are poised to be very competitive in the BIG EAST and are looking to improve upon last year's 4-8-5 record.

THE FORWARDS

The Friars' forward line returns junior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.). Camburn will be counted on to build upon her successes of last season, as she led the team in goals (five) and shots on goal (36), while adding one assist in 2006. Pettersen, who has seven career points, also will feature in the Friar attack. Providence also will look to newcomer Alyssa Leary (Edina, Minn.) who comes to the Friars after being named to All-Conference and All-State teams during her high school career. She has extensive playoff experience, as her teams consistently made conference and sectional championships.

THE MIDFIELD

Providence's midfield will prove to be the most experienced area of the Friar lineup. Senior captain Danielle Wieneke (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), who started each of PC's 17 games last season, and sophomore Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.), will be the leading the midfield. Benko had a strong freshman campaign in which she totaled four points on one goal and two assists. Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) also returns to the midfield, able to build on the experience she gained through 14 starts as a freshman. Senior Kelsey Kirkpatrick (Hatboro, Pa.) will be looked upon by Coach McGirr to help in the middle after playing in 10 games last season. Caitlin Hostetler (Portsmouth, R.I.), who has recovered from a season ending injury sustained last year, will have a role as an attacking midfield player for the Friars. Senior Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) returns after a stellar season during which she was among the team leaders in goals (two), points (five), and shots on goal (30) and will provide leadership along with classmate Morgan Spatafore (Katonah, N.Y.), who appeared in 15 games last season. Two freshmen who will be vying for time in the midfield for the Friars are Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) and Kaitlin DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.). Trubia, who was a member of All-State teams in three out of her four seasons in high school, is a versatile player who can play both the attacking and holding midfield roles. DelCiampo is a three year All-Conference selection and a strong leader on the field who captained her high school and club teams.

THE DEFENDERS

The Friar defense is composed of a veteran presence, and it will be a difficult task for any opposing offense to overcome. After losing captain Leah Vieira to graduation, junior captain Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.), who started every game for the Friars in 2006 and scored a goal, will now anchor the defense. Helping her shut down the opposition will be fellow captain Lauren Veccione (Sudbury, Mass.). Juniors Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) and Kelly Determan (San Diego, Calif.) will be looked upon to provide leadership in the back as well. Last season, Gent led the Friar defense in points (five) as well as in assists (three). Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) played all 17 games for the Friars last season and will add more experience to the Friar defense. The Friars boast two freshmen who hope to have an immediate impact on the defense as well. Jackie Pastor (Langhorne, Pa.) is a three time First Team All-State Prep selection and led her school to four-straight New Jersey Prep "A" Championships. She is also expected to see some time at the forward position. Marra Whaley (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was a member of the All-New England team as well as various All-State teams. Both Pastor and Whaley will add depth to the Friar backline.

THE GOALKEEPERS

The Friar goalkeeping position will be led by senior Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.). Last season, Elfers started all 17 games for Providence. She allowed 28 goals for a 1.58 goals against average. She also made 100 saves over the course of her junior campaign. Freshman Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) will be looked upon as part of the Friar future. In 2006, she recorded 10 shutouts and had a 0.65 goals against average while she guided her high school team to the state quarterfinals.

Coach McGirr has a squad that boasts junior and senior experience at every position. He also has been able to bring in two recruiting classes, consisting of highly skilled and athletic underclassmen. These two factors allow PC to enter the 2007 season with high hopes.
