PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Notre Dame, 82-65, on February 20 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. With the loss, Providence falls to 13-13 overall (3-10 BIG EAST). Notre Dame improves to 18-8 (9-4 BIG EAST).

Notre Dame held a 39-36 halftime lead. Providence's Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) and Notre Dame's Charel Allen went head-to-head in the opening 20 minutes, as each scored 14 points. The lead changed hands five times and was tied three times. Providence held the largest lead of the half (six points) at 12:42, while the three point lead for the Fighting Irish at halftime marked their largest lead of the game. Notre Dame shot 48.3-percent (14-29) in the first half and was 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. Providence shot 37.1-percent (13-35) and was seven-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Notre Dame started the second half on a 21-0 run over the first 10:53 of play to take control of the game and never looked back. Notre Dame outscored Providence, 43-29, in the final 20 minutes. The Irish held a decisive 45-36 edge in rebounding during the game.

Allen led all scorers with 26 points for the Irish. Melissa Lechlitner tallied 16 points, followed by 11 from Melissa D'Amico.

Marandola finished the night with 24 points. Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored 11 points and Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10. Snyder's 10th point of the evening helped her to become the 28th player all-time at PC to score 1,000 points.

Providence College (13-12, 3-9 BIG EAST) returns to action against 23rd-ranked Rutgers on Tuesday, February 20. The game will be played at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
