Women's Hoops Falls To USF, 78-64

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe South Florida, 78-64, on February 13 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The Friars held a five-point halftime lead (38-33), the the Bulls caught fire in the second half to outscore PC, 45-26, for the victory.
The Bulls went to the free-throw line 30 times on the night and connected on 21 points, compared to PC's 10-of-13 performance from the charity stripe. USF also held a 49-38 edge in rebounding.
Sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) scored a game-high 20 points and added eight rebounds, two assists and one steal. Sophomore Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) each chipped in 11 points, while Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 points. Senior Kristina Baugh (Boston, Mass.) dished a game-high five assists and Bove handed out four assists. Junior Aga Lorenc (Lubycza, Poland) grabbed a team and career-high nine rebounds before fouling out of the game with just over eight minutes remaining.
Jessica Dickson netted 20 points for USF and add 10 rebounds for a double-double. Daiane Packer scored 16 points, followed by 13 from Nalini Miller and 10 from Shantia Grace. Rachael Sheats chipped in eight points and recorded a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Friars led by as many as 10 points in the first half with 2:16 on the clock. USF closed the half with a 7-2 scoring advantage to cut the lead to five at halftime (38-33).
With 16:18 remaining in the second half, USF took a 43-41 lead on a three point bucket by Packer. The Friars tied the game, 43-43, on two free throws by Holmes, but the Bulls would retake the lead for good on another three-point basket by Grace at 13:53. Providence hung around and trailed by just three (55-52) with 9:03 remaining in the game, but USF would finish off the game on a 23-12 scoring run to take the win.
Providence College (13-12, 3-9 BIG EAST) Saturday, February 17 against Notre Dame in a BIG EAST match-up. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
