Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team will face off against the Pirates of Seton Hall on Wednesday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. in a crucial BIG EAST Conference match. The Friars look to improve their season-long winning streak to four games.
Providence (8-5-1, 4-3-1) is coming off a successful week in which they shut out both opponents en-route towards moving into fourth place in the BIG EAST Blue Division. In their last contest, the Friars traveled to Pittsburgh and earned a 2-0 victory over the Panthers. Senior midfielder Michael Narciso (Livingston, N.J.) scored the game-winner while freshman Alex Redding (Newton, Mass.) picked up the assist. The assist, along with his game-winning goal against No. 9 Boston College, helped Redding earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors.
Also earning recognition following the pair of victories was junior goalie Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) as he was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week. Murray has seven shutouts on the season and has not allowed a goal in the last 274:47.
Senior All-American Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) currently leads Providence with 14 points on five goals and four assists. He is also tied for first in the BIG EAST with four game-winning goals. Joining Maduro in the offensive attack for the Friars is sophomore forward Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) who ranks second on the team with 11 points by the way of five goals and one assist.
Seton Hall (7-7, 3-4) is coming off a 2-0 road loss at the hands of Notre Dame on Sunday, October 21. The explosive offense has scored 28 goals on the season, good enough for the second most in the conference behind only No. 1 UCONN. The Pirates are led by junior Eliseo Giusfredi who ranks second in the BIG EAST with nine goals and 25 points. Seton Hall will also look towards 2006-2007 Gatorade National Player of the Year, Brayan Martinez, as he has recorded 10 points on three goals and four assists.
In goal for the Pirates is sophomore Paul McHenry. McHenry has two shutouts on the season and has given up 20 goals in 13 matches.
Last season, Providence was able to go on the road and defeat Seton Hall, 1-0. Current senior Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the match with a strike from 25 yards out.
Following Wednesday's game, the Friars will host No. 4/7 Notre Dame on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be televised on Cox Sports Television.
