Providence College Tennis Finishes Fourth at New England Championships

The Providence College women's tennis team placed fourth at the New England Women's Tennis Championships which wrapped up play Sunday, October 14, after two days of matches in Fairfield, Conn. The Friars finished with 47 points. Winning the tournament was intra-state rival University of Rhode Island, which finished with 77 points. Host schools Fairfield (58) and Sacred Heart (48) rounded out the top three.
Leading the way for Providence was the duo of senior Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomore Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.). The pair went into the weekend's championship with a perfect 4-0 doubles mark. In their first match on Saturday morning in the Flight #3 doubles bracket, Lyons and Cusack defeated Sacred Heart's Mandy Finkelstein and Britany Price, 8-2. The pair follwed with a victory over Fairfield's Gretchen Amberg and Courtney Price, 8-3. Lyons and Cusack would eventually fall to Rhode Island's Christen Cadigan and Brooke Hoover in the first place match, 8-1. The second place finish earned the Friars seven points.
The Friars played strong in the singles flights as well. Three of Providence's six singles competitors left with a third place finish. The three third-place finishers were senior Kate Lyons in the Flight #3 singles, sophomore Dara Hawkins-Hodgson (South Euclid, Ohio) in the Flight #4 singles, and freshman Ayushi Sinha in the Flight #5 singles.
Providence's fourth-place finish at the New England Championships was their final event for the fall season. The squad finished with an overall 1-1 mark. The Friars will take the courts again this coming spring.
