PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Monmouth, 6-0, in non-conference action on Sunday, September 10 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The Friars remain unbeaten on the season with a 6-0 record, while Monmouth falls to 1-4 on the year.
The Friars took a 3-0 lead into half time after outshooting the Hawks, 23-0, in the opening 35 minutes of play. Senior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) struck first for PC as she knocked in a crossing pass from fellow senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) 21:43 into the game. Junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) put PC ahead, 2-0, when she tipped a Ewens pass in from the left post at 30:07. Providence capped its three-goal half with as senior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) scored off a direct shot on a penalty corner at 33:14. Junior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) and McGow each were credited with an assist on the play. The assist marked Stoddard's first collegiate point at PC.
In the second half, freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) gave the Friars a 4-0 lead as she scored, unassisted, at the 52:33 mark. After a scramble in front of the cage at 61:24, the Friars were awarded a penalty stroke, which was converted by sophomore Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.). Lane's goal gave the Friars a 5-0 lead. Providence added its final tally of the day as Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal off a feed from Lane at 67:43.
Providence outshot Monmouth, 36-5, for the game and held a, 25-3, advantage in shots on goal. The Friars also held a 15-3 edge in penalty corners.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) registered the third shut-out victory of her young career at PC with three saves. The last time Providence recorded three-or-more shutouts in a season was during the 2003 campaign. Monmouth goalkeeper Chelsea Farley took the loss in the cage. She allowed three goals and made 18 saves. She was relieved by Megan Smith with 17:46 remaining in the game. Smith allowed three goals and recorded one save.
Providence (6-0) will return to action on Wednesday, September 13 against Boston University. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
