PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied with less than five minutes remaining to lift the Providence College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rhode Island at Glay Field on Wednesday afternoon. Mancarella blasted a header into the top right corner after receiving a perfect service on a corner kick from classmate Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.). With the win, the Friars improve to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Rams suffer their first setback and fall to 1-1.
Providence opened the scoring at 28:24 when Gent's low, driving shot found the back of the net. Freshman Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up the assist on the play which was a set piece after a URI foul. The Rams got the equalizer at the 66:51 mark off a direct kick from Thorunn Jonsdottir and it appeared as if the two teams were headed to overtime until Mancarella's late heroics.
For the game, PC outshot URI 11-10, including a 7-4 advantage in the second half. In goal, Providence junior Laura Elfers made six saves, while Rhode Island's Danielle van Vierssen made three stops.
Providence will be in action again on Friday, September 1, when it hosts Fairfield at Glay Field.
