BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Vermont, on Saturday, February 4, at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Friars improve to 14-9-4 overall and 8-4-2 in the HOCKEY EAST standings. With the win, the Friars are 12-0 on the season when they score four or more goals. PC's two Vermont natives, Caitlin Malboeuf (Fairfield, Vt.) and Stephanie Morris (South Burlington, Vt.), each notched a point in the victory in their home state.
Freshman Maura Grainger (Ithaca, N.Y.) netted her first collegiate goal at 4:16 of the first period. Freshman Erin Normore (Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Vermont native Caitlin Malboeuf (Fairfield, Vt.) assisted on the play. Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) netted her first collegiate short-handed goal which proved to be her fourth game-winner of the season. Watrous' unassisted goal came at 11:52 and ended the first period with a Friar advantage, 2-0.
Both defenses played tough as the second period went scoreless.
Lindsey Tilbury netted her first short-handed of the season with an assist from Karen Sentoff at 6:31. The Catamounts cut into the Friar lead, 2-1. The Friar freshmen class concluded the night for Providence. Freshman Katy Beach (Middlebury Heights, Ohio) responded with her fifth goal of the season at 8:51. Watrous earned her 18th assist of the season on the play. At 9:52, freshman Stephanie Morris (South Burlington, Vt.) netted her second goal of the season. Sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) assisted Morris on the play.
Providence out shot Vermont, 28-19, including 10 shots in both the second and third periods. The Friars (0-6) and the Catamounts (0-5) both tallied a short-hander despite going scoreless on the power play.
Freshman Stacey Scott (Massena, N.Y.) started in goal for the Friars and earned her second decision and 18 saves in the process. Katie Nichols made a game-high 24 saves in the net for the Catamounts.
The Friars will continue on the road at Vermont's Gutterson Fieldhouse on Sunday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m.
