PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Friars earned their ninth consecutive win over St. John's as they defeated the Red Storm, 81-73, on Saturday, February 4 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Freshman Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) was one of three PC players in double figures as he recorded a game-high 19 points in the win.

The Friars have not lost to St. John's since a 61-46 defeat on February 8, 2000. PC kept its winning streak alive by overcoming a nine-point deficit in the second half and shooting 50 percent from the field (25-50) and 83.9 percent from the free-throw line (26-31).

The first half was back and forth with each team shooting well from the field. The first half featured eight ties and nine lead changes. SJU held a 45-40 lead after 20 minutes of play and shot 59.3 percent. The Friars were an impressive 15-25 from the field (60 percent) in the first half. Curry paced PC in the first half with 11 points.

In the second half, both teams slowed down and tightened up the defense. St. John's wasted little time building its largest lead of the game over the first three minutes of the second half as they led by nine points (53-44). With 13:27 remaining in the game freshman Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) finished a layup to cut SJU's lead to five points (58-53). PC then held the Red Storm to just two points in a six minute span, which allowed the Friars to take a 61-60 lead with 7:29 left in the game. The game again went back and forth before the Friars closed the contest with a 7-0 run over the final 53 seconds to convert a 74-73 lead into an eight-point win. Curry hit a key jumper with 42 seconds remaining to increase PC's lead to three points (76-73) and junior Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.) made a layup and hit the free throw after being fouled on the play to boost the lead to six points. Curry hit to free throws with one second left to seal the win.

Hill finished with 17 points and senior Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) added 13. Freshman Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had a game-high 10 rebounds.

St. John's had five players score in double figures, including Daryll Hill, who had a team-high 16 points.
