PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Sophomore Randall Hanke poured in a game-high and BIG EAST career-high 22 points off the bench on 8-of-12 shooting to lead Providence to a 77-56 win Tuesday night over USF at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. He also added seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals in just 23 minutes as the Friars never trailed and posted their fifth conference win of the season.
Senior Donnie McGrath added 20 points for Providence (12-12, 5-8 Big East), who remain in the running for a spot in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament.
USF's James Holmes with 18 and Melvin Buckley with 15 paced the Bulls (6-20, 0-13), who lost a school-record 15th straight game. South Florida has yet to win a conference game in its first year in the Big East, and extended the nation's second-longest losing streak. Former conference member and Sunshine State native Miami is the only other program to go winless in BIG EAST play in the last 25 seasons, that occured in 1993-94.
Hanke had 19 points in the first half and led Providence to a 41-22 advantage at the break. Only Holmes, who scored 12 points in the first half, all on 3-pointers (4-of-7), kept the Friars from breaking out even more in the first 12 minutes. Melvyn Richardson's jumper pulled South Florida to within 7, 25-18, at 8:15, and that was the closest the Bulls would come.
USF trailed at the half, 41-22, after committing 11 turnovers while shooting just 31 percent.
The Bulls came within nine points in the second half when Buckley had three consecutive 3-pointers. Providence countered with a 11-0 run to bring the margin to 60-40.
McGrath had 20 points to mark the fourth time this season he has totaled 20 or more, as well as the eighth time of his collegiate career. PC freshman Geoff McDermott had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight rebounds to up his team-leading average to 8.7 rebounds per game. The Friars tied an opponent season-low by holding the Bulls to just 22 first half points, and out rebounded South Florida, 47-25. USF entered the game averaging 4.92 three-pointers per game and hit five in the first half. USF tied a season-high with nine trifectas for the contest.
Providence men's basketball returns to action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at No. 9/9 Pittsburgh.
