PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College tennis team was defeated, 6-1, at Marist this weekend. The Friars were led by freshman Meghan Gilroy (Fairfiend, Conn.), who picked up a straight-set win in singles play and had a hand in PC's lone doubles victory.
In doubles, Gilroy and classmate Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) defeated Caitlin Broderick and Megan Gureck, 8-4. Providence's No. 1 duo of junior Jennifer Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior Sara Bitetti (Norwood, Mass.) was defeated by Inge LeGrange and Yana Tikhonko, 8-4. Finally, at the No. 2 position, juniors Andrea Lee (Cunmberland, R.I.) and Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) fell to Mirelva Colon and Erin Godly, 8-2.
In singles play, Gilroy, representing PC at No. 6, defeated Broderick in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Marist swept the remaining singles matches, with Daigle being defeated at No. 1 (2-6, 4-6), Bitetti at No. 2 (3-6, 3-6), Lee at No. 3 (4-6, 2-6), Rissolo at No. 4 (0-6, 3-6), and sophomore Erin Kenaga (Norwalk, Conn.) at No. 5 (4-6, 0-6).
"Kenaga had a real strong showing in her first dual match of the year," Head Coach Wayne Turner noted. "And Gilroy and Rissolo continue to make significant contributions as well, which speaks volumes about the future of our program."
The Friars (3-4) return to action on Friday, February 10, when they travel to UMass-Amherst for a 7:00 p.m. match.
