PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Kelly Whitney scored a game-high 20 points as Seton Hall won its fourth consecutive game, 77-74 over Providence on Wednesday night.
The game featured 11 ties and 20 lead changes, including six lead changes on six straight possessions in the final three minutes.
Donald Copeland, who scored seven of the Pirates' final 12 points, scored on a left-handed layup with 1:32 to play to give Seton Hall (13-6, 4-3 Big East) the lead for good. Grant Billmeier made two free throws with 7.4 seconds left.
The Friars had three chances to tie or go ahead in the final moments, but missed all three shots, including a 3-point attempt by Sharaud Curry at the buzzer.
Herbert Hill led the Friars (9-10, 2-6) with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Donnie McGrath finished with 11 points and helped bring the Friars back from a 5-point deficit, scoring on successive drives to put them ahead 64-62 with 5:15 left.
Curry had 10 of his 13 points in the first half to spark the Friars to a 37-32 halftime lead.
Jamar Nutter added 15 for the Pirates.
PC men's basketball returns to action on Saturday, February 4 against St. John's as part of Parents Weekend at Providence College. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
