PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -Sharaud Curry had a career-high 27 points and Herbert Hill added 20 points and 20 rebounds to spark Providence past formerly unbeaten George Washington, 86-67. Hill's 20-20 was the first by a Friar since Marvin Barnes accomplished the feat in 1974.
Providence (3-1) had split with George Washington (4-1) twice in their only other meetings. The Friars ended the Colonials 22-game regular season active winning streak, the longest in the nation.
Maureece Rice paced five George Washington players in double figures with 15 points.
Midway through the second half, Providence surged ahead, 66-57 after a 15-0 run in three minutes, fueled by Ray Hall's four straight hoops. The Friars continued to expand the lead until the end. Providence held the Colonials to just 10-of-30 field-goal shooting in the second half, including only 3 of 11 from three-point territory.
The Colonials had a 41-40 halftime lead after five ties and eight lead changes. The Colonials made 9 of 13 three-point attempts and scored 16 points off 13 Friar turnovers. Curry scored 14 and Hill added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Friars, who stayed close the first 20 minutes by outrebounding the visitors 26-13.
The Friars also outscored the Colonials 44-22 in the paint and outrebounded their Atlantic-10 opponent, 51-27.
