Cross Country Competes At NCAA Regionals

BRONX, N.Y. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Regionals on Saturday, November 11 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The men's team finished second with 72 points and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on November 20. The women's team finished third with 97 points and will await an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships.

Senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) won the men's 10K race to pace the Friars in a time of 30:40.7. He completed the course 45-seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Mohamed Khadroui of Iona (31:26.4). Junior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) finished fourth overall with a time of 31:30.3. Junior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) also placed among the top-10 in 10th place overall in 31:56.3. Senior Nicholas Weidman (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) also scored for Providence. Weidman finished the race 16th (32:16.8) and McLaren placed 41st (33:04.3). Iona placed first in the team standings with 59 points. Iona also earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.

On the women's side, graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) paced the Friars with a third-place finish in a time of 20:59.6. Also scoring for Providence was sophomore Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.), freshman Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine), freshman Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) and junior Mary Nelle Trefz (Iowa City, Iowa). DiCamillo placed 13th (21:42.8) and Douglas was on her heels with a 14th-place finish in a time of 21:45.2. Twohig placed 20th (21:59.9) and Trefz rounded out PC's list of scorers in 47th (22:46.7). Boston College finished first in the team standings with 82 points. Iona placed second with 85 points. BC and Iona each receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
