WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence women's tennis team traveled to Worcester, Mass. to play in a make-up match vs. Holy Cross on Thursday, October 5, 2006. The Friars claimed two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches for a 5-2 win over the Crusaders.
In doubles action, sophomore Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) and freshman Allison Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) defeated Meg Moran and Meredith Bacon, 8-6. At second doubles, senior Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) and Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) also grabbed a win with an 8-6 defeat of Amy Garrity and Ivette Konopka. Holy Cross took the win at third doubles where freshmen Dara Hawkins-Hodgson (South Euclid, Ohio) and Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) were defeated by Kristen Meahl and Paige Brown, 8-2.
In singles action, the Friars took four wins. At No. 1 singles, Rissolo defeated Meg Moran (6-2, 6-4). At No. 2 singles, HC took the win with Ivette Konopka defeating Gilroy (3-6, 6-4, 10-3). Schulz tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Meredith Bacon at No. 3 singles and Cohen fell to Kristen Meahl at the No. 4 spot (6-4, 6-1). Hawkins-Hodgson took the win at the No. 5 spot, defeating Amy Garrity, 6-2, 6-1, and Cusack grabbed a win at No. 6, defeating Meg Manahan, 6-2, 6-3.
With the win, the Friars improve their record to 2-1. The Friars return to action on Saturday, October 7 when they square off against Monmouth in a home match. Action begins at 10:00 a.m.
