Providence Tennis Defeated at URI, 7-0

The Providence College Tennis team traveled to Kingston, R.I. on October 5, 2006 to play interstate foe, Rhode Island. The Friars were defeated 7-0 in the match.

In doubles action, sophomore Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) and freshman Allison Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) fell to Valerie Chacon and Lara Maura , 8-3, at No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, senior Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) were defeated (8-2) by Grace Hedstrom and Nyssa Peele. At No. 3 doubles, the freshman pair, Dara Hawkins-Hodgson (South Euclid, Ohio) and Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) were defeated by Amanda Barletta and Stefani Catanzano, 8-2.

Rhode Island swept the singles play as well. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) was defeated by Lara Maurer (6-3, 6-1). At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) was defeated by Valerie Chacon (6-3, 6-0). Senior Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) made a run at the No. 3 spot before being defeated by Grace Hedstrom (7-5, 7-5). At No. 4, freshman Allison Cohen lost (6-2, 6-1) to Nyssa Peele. At. No. 5, freshman Dara Hawkins-Hodgson (South, Euclid, Ohio) was defeated by Amanda Barletta (6-4, 6-1) and freshman Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) lost to Stefani Catazano (6-2, 6-0) at No. 6.

The Friars (1-1) return to action on Thursday, October 5 when they travel to Holy Cross. Action is slated to begin at 3:15 p.m. The Friars' next home match is Saturday, October 7 when they face Monmouth at 10:00 a.m.
