PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team has clinched one of the four spots in the 2006 BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship. Also earning a spot in the tournament is Louisville and Villanova. Providence will be making its first trip to the BIG EAST Tournament since 2000, when it advanced to the Championship Game.

"We're extremely excited about clinching a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament." Head Coach Diane Madl said. "It was our primary goal at the start of preseason and we are pleased that we have been able to accomplish that goal in the manner in which we have. It has been a challenging process over the past few years and it is nice to see our hard work has allowed us to be in this position today."

The remaining spot will be filled with Connecticut or Syracuse, as Rutgers and Georgetown have already been mathematically eliminated. Connecticut and Syracuse will face each other on October 21. If Connecticut defeats Syracuse, the Orange will be eliminated from play-off contention and UConn will earn the final spot. If Syracuse defeats Connecticut, the final play-off spot will be decided on October 28 when UConn travels to Providence for a 1:00 p.m. BIG EAST match-up. If Connecticut is defeated by Providence, at that point, the Orange would earn a spot in the tournament. If UConn defeats Providence, Connecticut will clinch the final play-off spot.

Once the four-team BIG EAST Tournament field is finalized, pairings and game times will be announced. The 2006 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will be hosted by the University of Louisville on November 4-5 in Louisville, Ky. All games are scheduled to be played at Trager Stadium.

Providence (13-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) has been ranked in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches' Poll for four-straight weeks and are looking to keep that streak going when the new poll is released on October 17. In the most recent poll, Providence was ranked 14th nationally. The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, October 18 against cross-city rival Brown at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played on Warner Roof on the Brown University campus in Providence, R.I.

Providence's 13 wins this season are the most since 1992 when the team completed the season with a 13-6-2 mark. In addition, the Friar's three BIG EAST victories are the most since 1997, when they completed the regular-season schedule with a 3-2 league mark.
