PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (8-8, 1-4 BIG EAST) defeated DePaul University (8-9, 1-5 BIG EAST) by the score of 76-75 in conference action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on January 21. Senior guard Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) hit a 15-foot jumper with 40.5 seconds left in regulation to break a 70-70 tie and freshman Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadow, N.Y.) iced it with a pair of free throws as the Friars earned their first conference win of the year.

Trailing by four early (16-12 at 12:52) the Friars used 18-4 run to hold a 10-point lead, 30-20, with 8:04 left in the first half. McGrath hit three three-pointers to spark the spurt.

The lead grew to as many as 11, 36-25, with 5:02 left in the frame. McGrath led both teams with 14 points in the first half including a four trifectas. PC held a 10-point lead at the break, 41-31.

DePaul began the second half with a 10-2 run over the first four minutes to cut the PC lead to two, 43-41 at the 15:56 mark. The Friars held on though and did not let the Blue Demons surge ahead easily. With PC ahead, 63-56 at the 7:53 mark, DePaul used a 11-3 run to post their first lead since mid-way through the first half at 67-66 at the 5:53 mark.

The Friars battled back though to tie it at 70-70 with 1:41 remaining.

It was a dunkfest for the Friars who threw down a season-high four dunks.

Sophomore Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) led PC with 19 points. McGrath finished with 16. Freshman Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) posted his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

DePaul's Sammy Mejia led all scorers with 30 points.

Providence men's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, January 25 at Rutgers. Tip off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the RAC.
