PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Friday, September 23, the Providence College women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie with the South Florida Bulls. In the draw, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) tallied a season-high 10 saves for the Friars.
USF came out strong in the first half, talking two shots on goal in the first ten minutes of play. By the 22 minute mark, Fedyshyn had already made three saves to back the Friars' one shot - an attempt by senior Kathryn Mahoney (Narragansett, R.I.) that was grabbed by South Florida's goalkeeper, Casey Garrett. In an attempt to put the Friars on the board, sophomore Amanda Klane (North Easton, Mass.) fired a shot that Garrett stopped just as the buzzer sounded signaling the end of the first half.
Providence came back from the break recharged as Mahoney dribbled the ball in and sent a shot just wide of the net in the 48th minute. Ten minutes later, sophomore Danielle Wieneke (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) fed the ball to junior Leah Vieira (Rochester, N.Y.) who was positioning herself for a shot in front of the net before being taken down by South Florida defender. With no call on the play, USF shifted play and took the ball the length of the field. At the 58:50 mark, Michelle Buskey took advantage of a misplayed ball by PC's defense and drilled a shot towards the lower left corner of the net, forcing Fedyshyn to make a diving save. Buskey again had a decent scoring opportunity less than five minutes later, when Fedyshyn beat her to a loose ball in front of the net.
Despite taking three shots in the last ten minutes of regulation, Providence was unable to find the back of the net. The Friars also were unable to capitalize on two corner kicks in the last 30 seconds, sending the game into overtime.
In the 92nd minute of play, Providence was called for a foul just a few yards out of the box. The Bulls' leading scorer, Jenny Mulvihill, drilled the free kick towards the net as Fedyshyn came up big again, grabbing her ninth save of the game. Only a minute later, the Friars drew another foul and Mulvihill's shot from just outside the box was booted away by a PC defender. At the 96:25 mark, USF's Erica Lewis crossed the ball to Megan Morton, whose shot was scooped up by Fedyshyn.
The Friars kept their intensity through the second overtime, outshooting the Bulls, 3-0. Four minutes in, sophomore Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) blasted a shot that would have sealed the game for PC, but fell just wide of the net. A corner kick and shot on goal by the Friars in the final 30 seconds both came up short, ending the game in a scoreless draw.
With the tie, Providence (3-4-1 / 0-1-1 BIG EAST) heads to #20 Marquette for a 2:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) game on Sunday, September 25.
