Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team opened up the season with a 2-0 shutout victory over the University of Maine on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at PC's Glay Field. Freshman back Kelly Determan (San Diego, Calif.) led Providence with three points (one goal, one assist) as the Friars defeated the Black Bears, who were selected second in America East's Preseason Coaches' Poll. With the 2-0 win, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) recorded her second career shutout.

The Friars came out strong in the first half as freshman Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) notched her first collegiate goal when she was able to put a loose ball past Maine's senior goalkeeper, Tanya Adorno, at the 7:48 mark. Determan and sophomore Danielle Wieneke (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) each were credited with assists on the goal. Providence got on the board again at the 13:10 mark when Determan received a corner kick from freshman Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) and sent the ball past Adorno to put PC up, 2-0.

The last time Maine and Providence faced off (8/29/04), The Black Bears' Marie-Andree Canuel recorded four goals in a 5-0 victory over the Friars. This time around, Canuel was blanked by Fedyshyn, who stopped each of her four shots. Providence's defense also had a solid showing limiting senior Heather Hathorn, who entered the game as Maine's leader in both career goals (30) and career points (69), to just one shot on goal.

Making his debut as a head coach, Providence's Jim McGirr picked up his first career win as the Firars improve to 9-2 in the all-time series against Maine. The undefeated Friars (1-0) return to action on Friday, September 2 when they travel to Colorado College for a 9:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) game against Air Force Academy.
