PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey fell to Ohio, 2-1, on Sunday, August 28 at PC's Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. It marked the first-ever game at the brand new multi-million dollar facility, which was completed in early August.
The Bobcats held off a furious second-half rally by the Friars. Providence outshot Ohio, 14-8, including a 10-3 shot advantage in the second half. PC also out-cornered the Bobcats, 6-4. The Friars were denied on two penalty corners as time expired in regulation, allowing Ohio to earn the one-goal victory.
Ohio took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Torrie Albini lifted a ball past the Friar goalkeeper 14:29 into the game. The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the second half with a score off a penalty corner. Albini took the initial shot on goal from the top of the circle and Estienne Coetzee tipped it in for the goal. The tally came just 10:00 minutes into the second half.
The Friars finally got on the board with 16:29 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) drilled a shot off the keeper's pads and sophomore Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) collected the rebound and scored the goal.
Providence (0-1) will return to action next weekend with back-to-back games against non-conference foes Vermont and Northeastern. PC hosts Vermont on Saturday, September 3 at Noon, while Northeastern comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday, September 4. Both games will be played at PC's Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
