EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Saturday, February 5, the Providence College women's tennis team took on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers, in a 6:00 p.m. match at Tennis Rhode Island in East Providence, R.I. Competing in its first dual match of the year, Rutgers dominated Providence to take home the 5-2 win. The Friars' two points came as a result of injuries to the visiting team.
In singles action, senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) played at the No. 2 position. Down 4-6 in the first set, Gilbride was awarded the default victory when Rutgers' junior Jill Markowitz sustained a match-ending injury. PC was defeated in straight sets at the No. 1 position, as well as at Nos. 3-6
In doubles play, PC earned its second point of the day when the Scarlet Knights failed to supply opponents at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) represented Providence at No. 1 and fell to Rutgers, 8-2, in the only doubles match of the night
With the loss, the Friars fall to 0-1 on the spring season, 6-2 overall. Providence tennis returns to action on Friday, February 11, as it travels to Albany, N.Y., for matches against Saint Bonaventure on the 11th and Albany on the 12th.
