The Friars were swept in doubles action, as Albany duos defeated junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) at No. 1 (1-8), seniors Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) at No. 2 (5-8) and freshman Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) and junior Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) at No. 3 (2-8).
At the top singles spot, Bitetti earned her first No. 1 victory of the year, defeating Courtney Michels in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Friar freshman Katherine Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) earned PC's second point of the night with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Kyle Steller at the No. 6 position. At second singles, senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) recorded her team-leading 14th individual win - a four and a half hour, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 defeat of Christina Suarez. Finally, PC's No. 4, senior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.), knocked off Amanda Hall, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to capture the Friars' fourth point, as well as the match victory.
"That was more than just winning," said head coach Wayne Turner of his squad's victory. "It was a physical and emotional battle. Gilbride's win came after four and a half hours of match play. To get that fourth match point, we needed Rodger to win her final two sets. It was intense. Not only was she battling her opponent, she had all the Albany fans in her face. We were really pulling for her. All wins are good, but this one was great."
With the victory, PC improves to 1-1 on the spring season (7-2 overall), while Albany drops to 1-1.
