PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Ryan Gomes scored 22 points while Tuukka Kotti scored 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting to lead Providence to its first Big East win of the season, 81-64 over Rutgers on Sunday.
Gomes scored 20 or more points for the 15th time this season while Donnie McGrath added 17 points, shooting 5-for-7 on 3-pointers, for the Friars (11-13, 1-9).
Ollie Bailey led the Scarlet Knights (8-13, 2-9) with 15 points and seven rebounds while Ricky Shields and Quincy Douby each had 13.
Shields hit his school-record 243rd career 3-pointer 9:13 into the first half, surpassing Geoff Billet. He went 3-for-9 on 3s, giving him 245. Billet had 242 from 1995-1999.
The Friars opened a 48-28 lead on Kotti's three-point play with 16:44 to play, before Rutgers rallied with a 14-4 run, closing the gap to 10 on Shields' 3-pointer with 12:13 left.
The Friars pushed it back to 59-46, but the Scarlet Knights cut it to 59-53 on Bailey's turnaround in the lane with just under eight minutes to play.
Kotti, who also had a career-high 11 rebounds, then hit consecutive turnaround jumpers and Gomes nailed a 3-pointer and a short jumper during a 9-2 run as Providence pulled away.
The Friars, who held Rutgers to its second-lowest scoring half of the season, led 37-22 at halftime. Providence shot 57 percent (16-of-28) in the first half, while the Scarlet Knights hit just 33 percent (10-of-30).
Providence men's basketball (11-13, 1-9 BIG EAST) returns to action against nationally ranked Connecticut (15-6, 7-3 BIG EAST) on Tuesday, Feb. 15. The game will be televised live on ESPN 2 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
