KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (3-2) lost at the University of Rhode Island (4-1) by the score of 77-69 Saturday, December 3 in non-conference action at the Ryan Center. URI's Will Daniels had a game-high 18 points, while PC sophomore Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) had a team-best 14 points including 13 in the second half to lead the Friars.

URI began the contest 0-5 from the field, but with PC incurring a couple of turnovers at the other end, neither team could get in an early rhythm. The Rams connected for the first three buckets of the game and held a 6-0 lead four minutes into the contest mark before PC got on the board with a jumper from sophomore Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.) to make it 4-2. The Friars put together an additional eight points, capped by senior Donnie McGrath's (Katonah, N.Y.) three-pointer, and led 10-8, with 13:35 left in the first half.

The teams were even over the next few minutes, as the score was tied, 15-15 at the 9:25 mark. Freshman Sharaud Curry (Gainsville, Ga.), who was impressive making his first collegiate start, playing solid defense and canned a deep three to give the Friars a five point lead, 20-15, with 8:42 left in the first frame.

The Friars' lead would grow to as many as nine in the half as McGrath (a deep three) and sophomore DeSean White (a pair of free throws) combined to put the Friars ahead, 30-21 with less than seven minutes to go in the half. Curry would give the Friars an eight-point lead (37-29) with 1:56 left in the half as he made three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.

Rhody would cut it to four, 38-34, but a free throw by Hill sent the teams into the locker room with the Friars ahead by five, 39-34. URI outrebounded Providence in the frame, 22-16, including an 11-4 edge on the offensive glass.

The Rams opened the second half with a 13-5 run over the first 3:15 to post a 47-44 lead. Sophomore Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) and answered with a jumper, and pair of free throws to put the Friars back ahead, 48-47 at the 16:12 mark.

URI continue their run though, and led by five, 53-48, forcing the Friars to call a timeout at 14:03. PC would respond and tie the game at 53-all, with 11:54 left as Hanke had a conventional three-point play.

The contest featured 10 ties and six lead changes.
