PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman forward Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST men's basketball Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, December 27. He averaged 14 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in two wins over Northeastern (December 20) and Yale (December 22) last week.
McDermott recorded his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds in a 92-70 win over Northeastern. Versus Yale, the freshman forward was 6-8 from the field and scored 18 points. He also recorded a game-high nine rebounds. For the season, he is averaging 10.6 ppg and 7.6 rpg.
McDermott, who leads the Friars in rebounding (7.6 rpg), ranks eighth in the BIG EAST in rebounding. He also is averaging 10.6 points per game.
Prior to attending Providence, McDermott starred on the football and basketball teams at New Rochelle High School. He is the son of Barbara Eveillard and Oscar McDermott.
The Friars, 5-4, return to action tonight against San Diego State at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. at 7:30 p.m.
