PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Coach, Phil Seymore, announced the captains for the 2005-06 women's basketball team on Thursday, November 17. Fifth-year senior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) and senior Allie Gard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) have earned the honor of team captains.

"Gayle and Allie have been chosen to serve as co-captains of this year's women's basketball team," first-year Head Coach Phil Seymore said. "Both are leaders on and off the floor. More importantly, they are well respected by their teammates, coaches and peers."

Nwafili, a co-captain in 2004-05, missed all of last season with an injury. She returns in 2005-06 for her final year of eligibility. During the 2003-04 season, Nwafili played 24 games and appeared in the starting line up 20 times. She led the Friars in scoring (12.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). She finished fifth among BIG EAST Conference players with seven double-doubles. Nwafili reached double figures in scoring 14 times, including 20-or-more points in four games. She is the daughter of Henrietta and Ike Nwafili.

Gard embarks on her second season with the Friars, after transferring from Mesa Community College prior to the 2004-05 season. She played 28 games for the Friars last season and appeared in the starting line up 23 times. Gard led Providence with 88 assists for an average of 3.14 hand-outs per game. She also averaged 4.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.71 steals per contest. She is the daughter of Jeanne English and Dave Gard.

The Providence women's basketball team opens the 2005-06 season on Friday, November 18 against Sacred Heart University. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:05 p.m. and will be played at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
