Box Score

Queens, N.Y. - On a rainy October 7, the Providence College women's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with the Red Storm at St. John's Belson Stadium. Sophomore Danielle Wieneke (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) netted Providence's first goal of the game at the 50:34 mark, ending the Friars' six-game scoreless streak and tying the game at 1 all.

It appeared as though PC would open up the scoring in the 28th minute when Wieneke drilled a shot from 15 yards out that was just out of goalkeeper Jaime Beran's reach, however the shot curved just a little too far to the right and was deflected off the goal post. Less than ten minutes later, St. John's got on the board when Holly Ryder sent her own rebound over PC's sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Friars returned from halftime recharged and pressured the Red Storm's defense early on. In the 50th minute freshman Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) sent a free kick into the box where classmate Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) fired a quick shot that was knocked down by the Red Storm defense and then sent to the back of the net by Wieneke at 50:34. The goal, which was Providence's first in 423 minutes of play dating back to September 11, marked the end of a six-game scoreless streak for the Friars - the longest in the program's history.

The Friars weren't finished there though. Just over four minutes later, Gent took another free kick - this one from 30 yards out - and blasted the ball to the upper right corner of the net to put PC up 2-1. The 4:11 between Providence's two goals was the quickest PC has scored any two goals this season. Additionally, the second goal marked the first time PC has scored more than once in the second half this season, as six of its seven goals all were scored in the first half of play.

St. John's battled back when Natasha Lee netted the game equalizer with less that fourteen minutes remaining in regulation. With the score tied, 2-2, the game went to overtime where Fedyshyn came up with the save of the game in the 96th minute stopping a hard shot from Lee.

In all, Fedyshyn made six saves in net for the Friars, who were outshot (18-11) by the Red Storm.

Providence women's soccer (3-7-2 / 0-4-2 BIG EAST) returns to action on Sunday, October 9 when the team travels to Syracuse for a 2:30 p.m. match against the Orange.
