BOSTON, Mass. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team skated past Northeastern, 5-1, on Saturday, October 29 at Matthews Arena in Providence, R.I. Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals in 17 seconds that concluded a four-goal first period effort. With the win, the Friars improve to 2-1-1 on the season and 1-1 in HOCKEY EAST play.
At the 4:11 mark of the first period, freshman Erin Normore (Ontario, Canada) scored her first collegiate goal with an assist from senior captain Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.). At 7:01, Normore and junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) fed the puck to Thatcher for a goal that put Providence up 2-0. At 13:29 and 13:46, sophomore Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.) assisted Gigliotti for two straight goals within a 17-second span that ended the first period.
Senior forward Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored the only goal in the second period that gave Watrous and Thatcher their third assists on the season respectively. Payton's second period goal was her first since a 4-2 victory over Maine on March 20, 2004.
The Huskies made their presence felt in the third period with a power play goal at 6:36 by Crystal Rochon. Ashley Bielawski and Nikki Petrich assisted on the play.
The Friars went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Huskies went 1-for-7. Providence outshot Northeastern, 34-26.
Marisa Hourihan recorded one save and allowed two goals in 7:01 of action before being relieved by Sarah Belliveau who posted 28 saves in 52:59. Senior Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) recorded 19 saves in 52:05 minutes of action. Freshman Stacey Scott (Massena, N.Y.) recorded six saves in her first collegiate game between the pipes.
The Friars finish out the home-and-home series with Northeastern on Sunday, October 30 at PC's Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
