PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 28, 2005) -- Four members of the Providence College women's ice hockey team have been selected to the HOCKEY EAST All-Star Team, as announced by the league on Thursday, October 27, 2005. Seniors Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) and Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) along with juniors Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) will join 19 league all-stars to take on the 2006 U.S. Women's Olympic team on Sunday, December 11, at UNH's Whittemore Center. The contest marks the first ever all-star game as part of Team USA's Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Tour, designed to pit Team USA against elite collegiate competition in preparation for the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Providence has the maximum four players selected to the team and join UConn to boast one player picked in each position.
Bugden is a 2003 HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie selection. Budgen missed all of the 2004-05 season due to injury. In 2003-04, Bugden posted four shutouts and ranked 13th nationally in goals against average (2.22), 14th in winning percentage (.519), and 24th in save percentage (.904).

Last season, she finished sixth in the nation in power-play goals (13), seventh in assists per game (1.06), ninth in points per game (1.87), and 10th in the nation with 58 points (25 goals, 33 assists). For her efforts, Thatcher was named the 2005 New England Hockey Journal Hockey East Player of the Year and was a HOCKEY EAST First-Team All-Star unanimous pick.
Watrous was named 2003 HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Year. Last season, Watrous played in 33 games as a sophomore and finished third on the team in scoring with 39 points (21 goals, 18 assists). She completed her sophomore season second on the team with four game-winning goals and a plus/minus rating of +21.
Gigliotti will serve as a defensive alternate. She played in all 37 games last season and had a career-high in goals (six) and assists (17). She scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Connecticut in the HOCKEY EAST Championship game and was named to the 2005 HOCKEY EAST All-Tournament team.
Former Friar and current Connecticut Head Coach Heather Linstad will serve as the team's head coach, while current Friar Head Coach Bob Deraney will serve as the team's assistant coach. Providence's Sal Lombardi will serve as the team's equipment manager.
Former Friar Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), the 2005 HOCKEY EAST tournament MVP, is an alternate on TEAM USA and recently helped the squad to win the silver medal at the Four Nation's Cup held in Finland.
The December 11 game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and will be televised live throughout New England on Comcast's CN8. Tickets will be available at the Whittemore Center box office.
