NIAGARA, N.Y. (January 9, 2005) -- The Providence College women's hockey team fell to Niagara University, 5-4, in overtime action on January 9, at Robert Concetta Dwyer Arena in Niagara, N.Y.
At 2:17 of the first period, Ashley Riggs put Niagara on the scoreboard with her fifth short-handed goal of the season. Liz Johnson added to the Purple Eagles' lead with a goal at 4:03, assisted by Katie Kofron. The Friars quickly responded when Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) slapped an assist to Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) who netted a goal on the power play at 8:02. Providence tied the score, 2-2, with a goal by Zimmerman at 15:00 with the assist by Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.).
The Friars grabbed the lead at 18:17 of the second period when Smith tallied her second assist of the night to Watrous. Candice Moxley fired a shot past Providence goalkeeper Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) at 18:46 that knotted the scored, 3-3. Katie Sweeney and Amy Jack assisted on the play.
Zimmerman and Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) assisted Watrous on her third goal at 19:39, to end the second period with a 4-3 Friar advantage.
Providence held strong defensively in the third period until Riggs scored her second goal at 5:46 that forced the game into overtime. Charde Hoyle-Levy earned her 10th assist of the season on the play.
In overtime action, Hoyle-Levy connected with Riggs again for the overtime victory. Riggs posted her third game-winning goal of the season and recorded her first career hat-trick.
Thomas recorded 23 saves, while Niagara goalkeeper Allison Rutledge made a game-high 52. The Friars outshot the Purple Eagles, 56-28.
Providence will continue HOCKEY EAST play at Connecticut on Saturday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m.
