PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to West Virginia, 60-45, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, January 8 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Meg Bulger poured in 21 points and Chakhia Cole posted a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds in the win. Sophomore Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the PC with 17 points.

Providence jumped out to a 12-6 lead over West Virginia through the first 5:46 of play in the first half. WVU then rallied to take a one-point lead (16-15) with 7:38 on the clock on a 10-3 scoring run. At the 7:20 mark, PC regained the lead (17-16) on a lay-up from freshman Kristen Brown (River Vale, N.J.), but it would prove to be the final Friar lead of the game. West Virginia completed the half with a 10-4 scoring advantage to take a 26-21 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers took off on a 13-5 scoring run to open the first 6:10 of the second half to take a 13-point lead (39-26). The Friars rallied to get within four points on an 11-2 run over the next 4:22 of play to make the score 41-37 with 9:28 remaining in the game. It was the closest the Friars would get the rest of the way as West Virginia outscored PC, 19-8, down the stretch to take the 15 points victory (60-45).

Yolanda Paige joined Bulger and Cole in double figures with 14 points. She also dished out a game-high eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Sophomore Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) scored 10 points and handed out five assists for Providence. Freshman Yuliya Serebryanskaya (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with a career-high six rebounds in 19 minutes. She also totaled four points, two blocked shots, one assist and one steal.

Providence College (1-13, 0-3 BIG EAST) returns to action on Wednesday, January 12 against BIG EAST foe Syracuse. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at Manley Field House in Syracuse, N.Y.
