Women's Basketball Falls At Syracuse, 72-51

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Syracuse, 72-51, in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, January 12 at Manley Field House in Syracuse, N.Y. Jessica Richter led all scorers in the game for Syracuse with 18 points. Junior Allie Gard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) matched her career-high on the night with a team-leading 14 points.
Syracuse took a 34-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. The two teams were tied, 17-17, with 9:44 remaining in the first half. PC took a two-point lead (19-17) at the 7:45 mark on a lay-up from Allie Gard, but the Orange regained the lead (20-19) on a Rochelle Coleman three-pointer with 9:19 on the clock. From that point, Syracuse finished the half on a 14-7 scoring run to give them an eight-point cushion at the break.
Through the first 8:15 of action in the second half, the Orange outscored Providence, 18-8, to take a 52-34 lead. Syracuse held it's largest lead of the game (27 points) with 3:14 left in the game with the score showing, 69-42.
Chineze Nwagbo scored 15 points for Syracuse, while Vaida Sipaviciute recorded a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Orange shot 53.8-percent from the field (28-52), including a stifling 57.1-percent from beyond the three-point arc (8-14).
Freshman Danielle Howard (Willingboro, N.J.) and sophomore Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) each scored 11 points for Providence.
Providence College (1-14, 0-3 BIG EAST) will return to action on Thursday, January 20 against Rutgers. The game will be played at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in New Brunswick, N.J. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
