Tennis Opens Up Spring Season at Albany Doubles Festival

Albany, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team opened their spring season at the Albany Doubles Festival on Jan. 30, among a field of three opponents. Competitors included teams from Marist, Niagara, and Siena. The Friars went 5-5 over 12 matches (two were not finished) and were undefeated in Flight Three action.

For the Friars, junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) represented Providence in Flight One. They were 0-2 on the day, with losses to Niagara (6-8) and Siena (3-8).

In Flight Two, seniors Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass) recorded a 3-8 loss to Marist before defeating Siena by a score of 8-4. The duo was bumped up to Flight One for their final match, where they were defeated by another Marist team, 1-8.

Sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) took on Flight Three duties for Providence, and went undefeated with victories over Siena (9-7) and Marist (8-3). They closed out the day facing Niagara in Flight One. The match was not finished, however Lee and Hoffend were down 1-5 when it was called.

Three pairs represented the Friars in Flight Four. Junior Marissa Bigelli (Lincoln, R.I.) and freshman Erin Kenaga (Norwalk, Conn.) notched an 8-5 win over Siena, while freshmen Courtney Fischer (New Haven, Conn.) and Katherine Danaher (Norwood, Mass.) dropped a 2-8 decision to Niagara. Sophomore Therese Griffin (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.) went 1-0, with an 8-1 victory over Niagara before moving up to Flight Three, where they were at a 3-3 tie with a different Niagara duo before the match was called.

The Friars return to action this Saturday, February 5, when they host Rutgers at Tennis Rhode Island in East Providence, R.I. The dual match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. with singles competition preceding all doubles matches.
