PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)- Quincy Douby scored 20 points and sparked a late Rutgers run as the Scarlet Knights took a 72-67 victory over Providence Wednesday night.
In handing Providence its fourth straight loss, Rutgers (7-7, 1-3 Big East Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak and left the Friars (9-8, 0-4) and Seton Hall as the lone Big East teams without a conference victory.
Providence held a 59-58 lead with 3:23 remaining before Douby scored seven straight points to give Rutgers the lead for good.
The Friars got to within 66-65 when Ryan Gomes stole the ball and hit a layup with 42.7 seconds left. But Rutgers' Ricky Shields and Marquis Webb then hit two foul shots apiece, making it 70-65 with 19 seconds left.
Rutgers won the game at the foul line, hitting 21-of-28 free throws in the second half and 23-of-30 for the game, while Providence was 7-for-9.
Dwight Brewington had 18 points for Providence. Gomes, who entered the contest as the league's second leading scorer at 20.4 points per game, had a second straight sub-par offensive outing with 14 points on 6-for-18 shooting.
