PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Allan Ray scored 27 points and Jason Fraser added a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds as Villanova hung on for a 83-78 overtime victory at Providence on Tuesday night.

Villanova (9-2, 2-1 Big East) won for just the second time in the last 14 games at Providence and the Wildcats snapped a four-game road losing streak to the Friars.

The Friars (9-6, 0-2) took their first lead since the first half, 73-72, when DeSean White converted a three-point play with 3:13 left in overtime. Fraser responded with a three-point play of his own with 2:51 remaining and Kyle Lowry sank one of two free throws for a 76-73 lead.

Ray put the game out of reach with a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left.

Senior forward Ryan Gomes led Providence with a season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds. Herbert Hill added career-highs of 15 points, 12 rebounds and 9 blocks.

Providence committed a season-high 30 turnovers. The Friars also had a school-record 16 blocks, one shy of the conference mark set by Georgetown against Providence on Feb. 22, 1989.

Villanova, which has won eight of its last nine games, was playing without its leading scorer and rebounder, Curtis Sumpter, out with a sprained right knee for the second straight game. The Friars played without their starting point guard, Donnie McGrath, who missed the game with the flu.

Hill posted his first collegiate double-double with career-highs in all three categories and fell one block short of a triple-double.

Providence men's basketball returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 15 as it hosts No. 7/7 Syracuse. The game is slated to tip-off at 1:00 p.m. and will be televised live on CBS.
