Women's Tennis Soars Past Hartford

Hartford, Conn. - In women's tennis action, Providence College (1-0) defeated Hartford (1-1), by a score of 6-1, on Wednesday, September 22.
In singles competition, Providence won five of six matches. Its only loss came at the No. 1 spot, where junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) put up a strong fight, but was defeated by Hartford's Ana Maria Mora (2-6, 2-6). At No. 2, senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) downed Raquel Cassino (6-2, 6-0). Sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) took the victory at No. 3, defeating Lauren Perry in straight sets (6-4, 6-1), while senior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) improved her overall record with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Halley Werner at No. 4. Providence's No. 5, senior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) and No. 6, freshman Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) defeated Randi Taplits, 6-0, 6-2 and Amanda Lipski, 6-2, 2-6, (7-6), respectively.
In doubles action, Gilbride and Rodger dropped a tough No. 1 decision (6-8) to the Hartford duo of Mora and Cassino. At No. 2, Bitetti and Christensen teamed for an 8-2 victory over Perry and Werner. In PC's final victory, Hoffend and Lee defeated Taplits and Lipski, 8-1.
The Friars return to action this weekend as they travel to Fairfield, Conn. on Saturday, Sept. 25, for a 12:00 p.m. match versus Fordham (0-0) and a 3:00 p.m. match versus the home team Stags (0-0). The following day, PC will face the Red Foxes of Marist (1-0) in Poughkeepsie, N.Y at 2:00 p.m.
