West Point, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team traveled to West Point, N.Y. this past weekend, for the 2004 Eastern Collegiate Invitational. Playing at the No. 4 spot, senior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) was the lone Friar to compete in the first round, posting a 6-0, 6-2 victory over UMass. Sophomore Jen Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.), junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.), and senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) each received a first round bye, in the respective No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Of these four Friars, Rodger turned in the best performance, defeating Niagara (6-2, 6-1), before falling to the No. 4 seed from Lehigh in the quarterfinals. Daigle, who posted a 2-6, 2-6 loss to Binghamton, Bitetti, with a 6-7(3), 6-2 defeat by Long Island, and Gilbride, who fell to a George Washington opponent (2-6, 4-6), were all sent to the consolation brackets.
There, Daigle posted victories over Fairfield (8-2) and Bucknell (8-3) before falling to Long Island (6-8) in the semifinals, Bitetti lost to Marist (2-8) and Gilbride defeated Marist, 9-8(4), before falling to UMass' No. 2 seed in the quarterfinal round.
In opening rounds of doubles action, sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) were defeated by Seton Hall, while junior Marissa Bigelli (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore Therese Griffin (Louisville, Ky.) were shutout by Fairfield. In the consolation rounds, Bigelli and Griffin's loss to Long Island ended their play for the weekend. With a win over Niagara, Lee and Hoffend advanced to the semifinal round, where they fell to Long Island.
The Friars return to action Wednesday, Sept. 22 when they travel to Hartford for a 3:00 p.m. match versus the Hawks.
