PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Rutgers University, 1-0, on Sunday, September 19 in Piscataway, N.J. Rutgers freshman Adam Sternberger scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game to give the Scarlet Knights the victory.
After a scoreless first half, the Scarlet Knights pressured the Friars but were unable to score until Sternberger broke the 0-0 deadlock. Sternberger received a cross from senior Anthony Schiavino juggling it in the air with his left foot before firing a hard shot from 10 yards out in the 78th minute.
Friar senior goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) recorded four saves for the Friars. With the loss the Friars fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST action.
Providence will return to action on Wednesday, September 22 at Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
