STANFORD, Calif. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated, 3-2, by Stanford University on Tuesday, August 31 in Stanford, Calif. The loss wraps up a three-game West Coast trip, and the Friars return to Providence, R.I. with an overall record of 0-3. Freshman Abby Maguire (Branford, Conn.) started the scoring off with the first goal of her collegiate career to give the Friars a 1-0 lead just over 22 minutes into the game. Maguire's goal was assisted by sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.). Stanford rallied to tie the game, 1-1, seven minutes later as Jessica Zutz scored for the Cardinal off a pass from Mandy Kovach. Providence took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break as senior Melissa Kroslak (Hopkinton, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal, her first of the season, with just 54 seconds remaining in the first half. In the second half, the Cardinal scored two unanswered goals to take the eventual victory. Aska Sturdevan connected on a penalty corner, assisted by Eleanor Morgan and Lyndsay Erickson, at the 6:58 mark to tie the game, 2-2. Missy Halliday scored the game-winner for Stanford, unassisted, with 7:36 remaining in the game. Stanford outshot PC, 21-13, and held the advantage on penalty corners, 9- 4. Senior Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) made 10 saves for the Friars in the loss. Ana Kralovec made four saves to secure the win for Stanford. Providence (0-3) returns to action on Sunday, September 5 against Maine. The game is scheduled to be played at 11:00 a.m. in Orono, Maine.
