2004 FRIAR WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW Head Coach Tracy Kerr and the Providence College women's soccer team are excited about the team's chances of a successful 2004 season. The Friars are coming off a 7-7-3 campaign in 2003, which included their first ever victory over Miami and a 1-1 tie against nationally ranked Boston College. The reason for the excitement this season stems from the wealth of talent on a young, but experienced team. The 2004 team will consist of nine freshmen, three sophomores, four juniors and six seniors. In 2004, the Friars will rely on their offense as they compete in the always tough BIG EAST Conference. Leading the offensive attack for the Friars will be senior midfielder Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.). Last season, Robertson finished first on the team in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points. Fellow senior, co-captain BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) will be counted on to help carry the offensive load. Bruni finished the year second on the team with four goals and two assists for 10 points. Last season's talented junior class accounted for 12 of the Friars' 13 goals. Midfielder Lauren Ritchie (Sayville, N.Y.) finished third on the team in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points. Bruni and Ritchie were tied with a team-high two game-winning goals each last season. Shannon McMorrow (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished the season with two points (one goal). Veronica Bakke (Alesund, Norway) was out for much of the season due to injury. Co-captain Kate Kearney (Glastonbury, Conn.) played in all 17 games for the Friars and controlled play in the midfield. Gabrielle Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) provided a spark for Providence off the bench. The Friars' attacking offense will be boosted by a group of incoming freshmen. Kelsey Kirkpatrick (Hatboro, Pa.), Amanda Klane (North Easton, Mass.), Morgan Spatafore (Katonah, N.Y.) and Danielle Wieneke (Easthampton, Mass.) will each bring skill and leadership to the team. Kirkpatrick was First Team All-League last season at Hatboro-Horsham High School as she set the school record for assists in a season with 25. Klane, an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star for 2002-04, tallied 108 points in her high school career, while Spatafore netted 72 points and was her team's MVP in 2004. Wieneke is the all-time leader in assists in a game, a season and a career at the Williston Northampton School and was her team's MVP in 2004. On the defensive side, the Friars will count on the leadership of junior back Emily White (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and sophomores Erin Mastrodonato (Rochester, N.Y.) and Leah Vieira (Rochester, N.Y.). White is veteran player who will provide stability for a young but talented defense. White started 13 games for Providence last season in 2003. The sophomore duo of Mastrodonato and Vieira will be asked to take a bigger leadership role this season after a strong freshman campaign. Freshmen Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.), Leigh Paris (Newton Lower Falls, Mass.) and Lauren Vecchione (Sudbury, Mass.) will be looked to for immediate contributions. Amaral was named First Team All-Division her senior season and tallied 98 career points. Paris was a key member of the Newton High Division I North Soccer championship teams of 2001 and 2002, while Vecchione's team won the 2003 Division I State championship. The biggest question in the Friars' defense this season is who will replace standout goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.). Haines, who graduated last year, finished the season with a seven shutouts and 19 in her career, both school records. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Pickul (North Andover, Mass.) will battle for the starting position with incoming freshmen Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.). Last season, Pickul did not see any action due to Haines' strong performance. As a freshman Pickul earned a shutout against cross-town rival Brown in her second consecutive start and finished the season with an .897 save percentage and a 1.17 goals against average. Elfers was an All-County goalkeeper from 2001-03 and was named her team's MVP in 2002 and 2003. Fedyshyn posted 44 victories in 46 career games at Red Bank Catholic and was named to the 2003 and 2004 All-Courier Team. Kerr believes that the 2004 team will be one of the hardest working squads in her six seasons at Providence. The Friars have a combination of talent, speed, versatility, youth and experience. Providence enjoyed a solid season in 2003 and hopes to carry that momentum into 2004. Much of their talent on both sides of the ball will return for 2004 as the team looks to climb into the top of the BIG EAST. The 2004 season will kick off on Friday, August 27 as the Friars travel to Orono, Maine for games against Marist and the host Black Bears of Maine. Providence's first home match will take place on Thursday, September 2 when they host the Huskies of Northeastern.
