Under the direction of longtime Head Coach Ray Treacy, the men's cross country team will look to draw on the experience and leadership of a talented senior class for its 2004 campaign. Graduating only two student-athletes, the Friars will return the majority of last year's squad, which finished 24th overall at the NCAA Championship. Prior to this trip to the NCAA's, which marked Providence's ninth consecutive appearance at the Championship and 26th in school history, the Friars ran to a second-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championship. Seniors Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario), Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.), and Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) will lead the Friars in 2004. This trio combined for 11 top-10 performances in the 2003 season, and had top-three finishers in all but two meets. Wykes, who earned All-New England and All-BIG EAST honors, was the Friars' top finisher in five of seven meets. Among these were second, third, and fourth place finishes at the New England Championships, NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, and the BIG EAST Championships, respectively. His 37th-place finish at the NCAA Championships marked his best performance at the NCAA's. Moulton also had a strong junior year. He won the Boston College Select Meet and placed second at the Providence College Invitational. With an 86th-place finish at the NCAA Championship and four top-ten performances throughout the season, Moulton earned both All-New England and All-BIG EAST accolades. Guidera, who spent last winter and spring seasons recovering from an injury he suffered at the 2003 NCAA Championship, will return to action in September. With a junior year highlighted by fourth-place finishes at the Providence College Invitational and the Boston College Select Meet, Coach Treacy will look for Guidera to return to one of Providence's top three spots in 2004. Junior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) had a strong sophomore season in which he was the fourth Friar finisher at the NCAA Championships. Dionne, who has competed in consecutive NCAA's, also was a 25th-place finisher at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and a 28th-place finisher at the BIG EAST Championships. Senior Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) and junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) are expected to contribute to the team this season. Reale competed in the BIG EAST Championships last season, while Fagan was a 2002 participant in the NCAA Championships. Ben Pollock (Westford, Mass.) will look to make the most out of his senior season. In 2003, Pollock was a 47th-place finisher at the BIG EAST Championships. He also recorded a 14th-place finish at the Providence College Invitational. Sophomore Darren Brown (Spring, Texas) also will be one to watch, as his impressive debut left much anticipation for a successful 2004 season. His 13th-place finish at the Providence College Invitational helped the Friars to win their season-opening meet. Brown concluded his freshman campaign by competing at the NCAA Championships. Freshmen Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) and Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) are expected to make an immediate impact on the team. Haji holds the Connecticut state record in the two-mile run. Smith is a standout athlete who is among the top junior runners in New Zealand. He holds the New Zealand junior record in the mile (4:01.15). The 2004 cross country team will have strong veteran leadership and a solid freshman class, which will translate into another successful campaign.
