TOWSON, MD. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to 17th-ranked Towson University, 12-3, on Sunday, March 7 at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. The Tigers scored 20 seconds into the game and never looked back Towson improves to 1-1 on the year and the Friars drop to 0-2 overall. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's lacrosse.
The Tigers scored five goals on nine shots in the opening quarter for a 5-0 lead. Providence's Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.J.) ended the Friars' drought with a goal at the 12:25 mark of the second period but then Towson responded with a four-goal run that put the Tigers on top 9-1 midway in the third quarter. The Friars scored twice in the fourth period.
Jonathan Engelke, Drew Pfarr, Brian Myers and Steve Mull each tallied twice for Towson which won its 10th straight game when scoring 10 or more goals. Engelke and Pfarr each added an assist. Freshman Sean Nixon (Wyckoff, N.J.) paced the Friars with two goals. Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Richard Knightly (Windsor, Mass.) and Ross Nochumowitz (Baltimore, Md.) each recorded one assist for the Friars.
All three Towson goalies played. Starter Reed Sothoron had three saves while allowing just one goal before giving way to Mark DeGroat and Drew Montgomery.
Sophomore goaltender Ron Westgate (Forestdale, Mass.) relieved starter Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the net for Providence at the start of the second quarter and finished with nine saves while allowing seven goals.
The Tigers dominated the faceoffs, winning 14 of 18 draws and were led by DeFelice's 10-3 performance. Towson outshot the Friars 41-16 in addition to winning the ground ball war, 42-22.
Providence (0-2, 0-0 MAAC) will return to action on Wednesday, March 10 against #19 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
